    1. This is a children's book written by Gerald Durrell, one of my favorite writers. It is about 2 English children who are visiting a Greek island and their attempt to help their Greek friend who has inherited property as well as a large debt on the death of his father. The Greek villagers are all rich characters and there is lots of humor. It is a little dated, but still wonderful. My particular copy is made even better by amazing illustrations by Robin Jacques (I think).

    4. I really enjoy Gerald Durrell's other fiction books, and I was not disappointed by this one. Amanda, David, and their parents are at their vacation home on a sleepy Greek island, when they find out that their young friend Yani faces a foreclosure from the greedy local mayor. The children devise a clever plan to undermine the mayor and help their friend pay his debt, by kidnapping all the donkeys in the village! This is really a delightful and funny book, with its eccentric characters and happy e [...]

    5. You can tell he hasn't quite got down the writing for children bit, a lot of the sly observation seems likely to be more appreciated by adults, but the characters feel a bit sketched in, but it's full of affection and silliness and a clear love of the people and the place [I assume reflections on Corfu]. A perfect deterrent for winter blues.

    6. One of my childhood time books (actually my brothers' book that I stole). It has the twisted logic that made perfect sense to me. Donkeys will solve all your problems.

    7. Not nearly as entertaining has his Corfu memoirs, but I enjoyed it. My son might like it in a couple years.
